Let’s take some time to discuss artificial sugars.
Let’s talk about Artificial sugars also known as artificial sweeteners!
We would assume that replacing something that has sugar with something that is “sugar free” would be a good thing, right?
Believe it or not, eating or drinking something that is “sugar free” probably means you are consuming artificial sweeteners that are actually man-made chemicals that can cause some major health issues.
We often think that we are helping ourselves when we choose something that is sugar free but turns out we are harming our bodies by choosing this option because we are actually putting artificial sugars in our bodies.
So let’s see what a professional has to say when she says let’s talk about artificial sugars. According to Tina Christoudias, a Harvard-trained registered dietitian with nearly 18 years of experience.
1. Artificial Sweeteners Alter the Gut Microbiome and Cause Glucose Intolerance. We have more bacteria in our bodies than we do human cells! So, if our gut bacteria are off, it can affect all aspects of our bodies.
2. Consumption of Artificial Sweeteners Increases the Risk for Diabetes: This is almost comical when we think about it. Yes, someone with diabetes should remove sugar according to their doctor’s orders, however, consuming artificial sweeteners can make the problem worse. According to a 2015 study in the Journal of Nutrition found that there was a 15 percent increase in developing diabetes with an increased frequency of artificially sweetened drinks.
3. Artificial Sweeteners Lead to Weight Gain! What?! Yes, that’s right, artificial sweeteners lead to weight gain instead of helping with weight loss. In 2008, the San Antonio Heart Study was used to assess the relationship between drinking artificially sweetened beverages with long-term weight gain. 3,682 participants were followed over the course of a decade. Researchers found that consuming greater than 21 artificially sweetened beverages per week was associated with nearly doubled risk for overweight and obesity.
Tips for removing artificial sweeteners:
If you have been consuming artificial sweeteners already, it could be difficult to quit since they have a good habit of making us crave them!
Best tip for craving these horrible monsters is to try to drink more water!
As hard as it might be to break the habit of our normal drinks and foods, it is important, for optimal health, to become a label reader and try to avoid foods and drinks that say “sugar free.”
Words to look for:
Artificial sweeteners are sometimes called something different. Some names to avoid when buying food and drinks are:
- Sodium cyclamate
